A superb piece of British sporting memorabilia from Oxford College and Teddy Halls 'Golden Era' of rowing.
This presentation oar from St Edmund Hall is for the Summer Eight of 1964 and is decorated with calligraphy details of the team and their weights, as well as the college insignia featuring four Cornish Choughs. Summer Eight refers to the main intercollegiate rowing event of the year which take place on the river Thames in May.
The oar is number six of eight and belonged to A.J.Hawkes.
We have another similar oar that belonged to the same rower.
CONDITION
In original unrestored condition, various marks and knocks commensurate with age and use.
There is a crack to the back of the oar.
The text is is good order with no touch ups or major losses.
