This is a handsome small antique maritime chest of drawers which dates to the 1930s.
The chest was part of the fixtures and fittings aboard R.M.S. Speedwell, completed in 1935 and part of the Minesweeping Flotilla used by the British navy. The vessel has a fascinating history which you can access by copying and pasting the name below into Google
HMS Speedwell Halcyon Class Minesweeper
Made of solid mixed woods the chest is heavy and well made and is perfect for use in an office or study.
It is fairly compact, the front fitted with four drawers which are finished with inset brass handles and decorative escutcheons. The underside base of each drawer is handwritten with the name 'RMS Speedwell'.
The chest is set on removable turned feet and the wood has a wax polished finish which has a mid sheen. The feet are different heights, made intentionally this way for an uneven floor aboard ship so that they can be swapped around as necessary.
CONDITION
The chest is in solid structural condition with various historical marks of age and use.
The feet are slightly different heights so depending on how level your floor is, you may need to wedge one or two for it to sit straight.
The key for the locks has been lost somewhere in time.
Please take a look at all of the photographs as they are a good representation of its general condition.
