Antique Balloon Back Campaign Chair by Ross & Co, Restored & Reupholstered
Antique Balloon Back Campaign Chair by Ross & Co, Restored & Reupholstered
A handsome antique balloon back chair dating to the latter half of the 19th century.
The chair was designed and made by Ross & Co of Dublin and would possibly have been one of a set of four dining chairs.
This piece was designed as part of their range of campaign furniture, made for and used by officers in the Royal Barracks nearby.
The chair is a classic Victorian design and with a balloon back and scrolled mid rail.
The seat is deeply cushioned and has been newly reupholstered in Designer Guilds 'Zaragoza' Noir fabric, a heavyweight sumptuous weathered chenille.
The chair is designed to be taken apart for transportation and disassembles into six parts.
The front legs have steel threads which unscrew, the back legs have longer steel threads that extend through the back of the seat and up into the back rest, fixed into position with steel brackets and fixing lugs.
The wood has a polished finish which has a nice mid sheen.
CONDITION
The chair is in sympathetically restored condition, retaining its sense of history and character whilst being brought up to date for the modern home.
The wood has various marks, knocks and small areas of wear.
The legs have probably been slightly reduced at some point in time, perhaps to enable use as a desk chair.
